To portray the inner life of her characters George Eliot uses a characteristic analytic technique, one which distinguishes her from those novelists who suggest psychological issues mainly through the dramatic presentation of a character's speech or actions. George Eliot always uses such means, but adds to them a large element of explanation. She shows us her characters' minds in action, infusing with that demonstration her own interpretive comment. The following passages will attempt to illustrate the variety of effects achieved.
