ABSTRACT

The dwellers in the Arctic tundras of Northern Asia present problems of special interest to all students of primitive peoples. The Tungus and Lamuts of Eastern Siberia have less well tamed herds, although they have them sufficiently under control to milk them. The most remarkable part of their culture is that they ride and do not drive their animals, a method which is mentioned by Marco Polo. The food of the Chukchee shows very clearly both the effect of environment, the demand made by the excessively cold polar climate, and the result of their traditional culture. The Chukchee eat animals who have died of disease, and even those sea animals which drift ashore. The Chukchee habitation consists of a large round skin tent which in winter forms the dwelling-room. Among the reindeer Chukchee the framework consists of three large poles which are tied together as a tripod.
