ABSTRACT

The houses of the Gilyaks differ in summer and winter, and there is also a slight difference between those on Saghalien and on the mainland. The winter houses are built in the forest, usually near a river. The dress of the Gilyak is the same in both sexes, and differs in summer and in winter. In the former at present for the most part they wear the cotton cloth which they buy from the traders. The Ainu begin by building their house at the roof. They lash the rafters to long ridge poles at one end; the other end of these rafters being tied to horizontal poles. The Ainu wear gloves which protect the back of the hands but not the palms. Although a few ponies are sometimes to be seen in the Ainu villages, both their agriculture and their transportation are limited except by water to the women.
