T he Sed festival, described on page 94, was one of the oldest ceremonies of Egyptian kingship, an institution that endured for more than twenty-fi ve centuries. Chapter 4 describes the origins and development of Egyptian civilization from its beginnings among small-scale farming communities more than 6,000 years ago (see Table 4.1 on page 97).
