ABSTRACT

This chapter describes facility data regarding length of stay, average daily census, and number of beds. The facility is intended to represent the new standard for Veterans Administration facilities by providing better care for veterans with mental health disorders. Mental health clinics provide outpatient general and special mental health evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for veterans. The project served as the basis for the Veterans Administration's recent "Design Guide for Mental Health Facilities." In 1918 Congress tasked the Bureau of War Risk Insurance and Public Health Service to operate hospitals specifically for World War I veterans. C. Whitehead, R. Polsky, C. Crookshank, and E. Fik conducted a pre- and post-occupancy evaluation of four inpatient mental health units in a federal hospital using behavioral observation and surveys. While many of the suicides take place outside of mental and behavioral health settings, they are an indicator of the increased need for mental health treatment facilities for veterans.
