ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author shares a case example from beginning to end to provide a glimpse into the twists and turns a case can take. It is humbling to record and transcribe therapy sessions. Sometimes therapy is done 'for now' and the family is invited to call if therapists want to in the future. Consolidating gains is a process that should happen in every session to highlight instances of success and positive movement. The therapists' hope for clients lies in their confidence that they have the ability and expertise to build solutions in their own lives. Therapy, however, is not a play date. Play should always follow client needs and desires, and ultimately serve the preferred future. In the end, if therapists can increase their noticing and following skills and use play as a conversational tool, they will be better therapists.
