ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses classroom management. For almost all first year teachers, classroom management is the make-or-break. According to Emmer and Saborine, 'building positive relationships with students should be a primary focus of preventative efforts' when it comes to classroom management. As cited by Emmer and Saborine, research has shown that positive student-teacher relationships not only positively affect student attitudes and learning, but also have direct ties to teacher burnout and overall job satisfaction. When planning on how to build these critical relationships, make sure that their core philosophies are in the correct place. According to research published by Carol S. Dweck in her book Mindset, having growth mindset, or the belief that all students are capable of cognitive growth and development, directly affects their students' academic growth and performance. According to Bridget Hamre and Robert Pianta, it is critical for schools and teachers to maintain high behavioural expectations to go along with positive teacher-student relationships.
