ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses three discrete modes of work by Halprin, the 'Motation' System, RSVP cycles and Portland Sequence. The aim of this chapter is to connect and realign the valuable agency that this mode of work has achieved, particularly at a time with a resurgent interest in activities which describe the rhythm of places and seek modes to engage people in the built environment. Elements of the RSVP cycle could involve Motation scores, interviews, participant reporting scores, plan scores and an overall master score which layer the Resources, Scores, Valu-action, and Performance cycle. The RSVP cycle diagram could be started at any point and has two levels, an inner circle of self-orientation and an outer community orientated circle. As Randolph Hester reflects on Halprin's work, only theory and practice in concert create useful theory in landscape architecture.
