ABSTRACT
When the first white settlers set sail for Australia from England late in 1787, it was for the purpose of establishing a South Seas penal settlement. The English prison system was to be relieved by this process of its unwanted felons, an historical story of much interest to contemporary researchers (Hughes, 1986).
