ABSTRACT

Allotments and community gardens are participatory landscapes in which food production is made visible, and people cultivate connections with landscape. This chapter focuses specifically on the growth and development of allotments in Britain, and the community gardens in Australia, North America and Britain that evolved from them. We provide a brief overview of the history of allotments in Britain and community gardens in North America, Britain and Australia. We then go on to explore the particular landscapes of allotments and community gardens, and the roles that landscape professionals can fruitfully play in their development.
