ABSTRACT

This chapter explores about the home-based programmes which are based on developmental/behaviour modification model of child learning. It discusses the question of the content of parent involvement programmes. The kinds of service interventions which have been developed over the past 15 years have attempted to respond to various aspects of the situation in which parents of mentally handicapped children find themselves. The philosophy underpinning interventions with parents has undergone great change over the past fifteen years, as has been implied by the review of changes in the structure and particularly of the content of intervention. Few reports of workshops have presented results in terms of children progress, perhaps because the interventions are usually short-term. Formal evaluation of centre-based programmes for young mentally handicapped children is a difficult matter and has therefore been undertaken primarily for specific projects within total schemes. Home-based programmes are particularly appropriate for rural communities and can be backed up by radio and correspondence course.
