ABSTRACT

The Council included representatives from immigrant associations and politicians from the Social Services Board, the School Board and the Council. Refugee questions were never the responsibility of the Immigrant Committee which had acted as a debate forum in which politicians and immigrant representatives were present. National policy expects a greater awareness of immigrant questions, as immigrant policy is expected to be implemented by the public sector, rather than by private-sector organisations. In Haninge, there were 18 immigrant associations registered with the local authority and in receipt of grants worth almost 600,000 crowns in 1994. The Iranian cultural association had just over 100 members. Its activities included Persian language classes for children, and judo classes. Instead, the mosque was presented as a cultural threat to a Swedish place that would deprive Swedes of their heritage. The language of fieldwork was Swedish.
