ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors address the issue of mental health problems among employees, and the barriers employees face in receiving necessary treatment for these difficulties. They found that leadership support for treatment seeking was mentioned by soldiers as being critical for programmes designed to get military personnel into treatment. The authors discuss the importance of leaders in promoting the psychological health of employees, and how leaders and managers can reduce the barriers associated with the timely receipt of mental health treatment and create a supportive climate for employees getting help. They also address how early treatment for mental health problems is consistent with an organisational climate promoting resilience among employees. The authors explore that leaders and managers are in a unique position to create a climate of psychological health and a climate of safety for employees getting help for mental health problems when necessary. They identify a number of recommendations for practical applications of the chapter material.
