ABSTRACT

The government's attitude towards dissent and criticism of its actions and policies was not always as tolerant as Morrison's words would suggest. People who stepped out of line, privately or publicly, found themselves in difficulties, and sometimes prison. In order to discourage treasonous and subversive acts, the government passed a Treachery Act and various defence regulations. The government withdrew the subsidy which allowed the magazine to be sent to the British troops overseas. The outspoken anarchist magazine War Commentary, published by Freedom Press, had its offices raided, its workers charged with disaffection of the forces. Then the chapter presents some case studies on the people mindset and they are listed under various categories like Elaine Robson-Scott in August, Frank Mayes at the end of the war, Doris Nicholls on her wedding day, poem written by a young mother in the winter, an art student's recollection of VE Day and so on.
