ABSTRACT

High blood pressure is very prominent worldwide, and the associated dangers and consequences of high blood pressure can be detrimental to one’s health. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, stroke and related diseases, is the major cause of death in Ireland, accounting for almost 40% of all deaths (Irish Heart Foundation 2010). A diet high in salt has been linked to an increased incidence of high blood pressure. Populations around the world are consuming too much salt, largely as a result of the high salt content of processed foods. A relatively modest reduction in salt intake has the potential to prevent a significant number of heart attacks and strokes annually (Bibbins-Domingo et al. 2010).
