ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the strategic profile of Portuguese European Union (EU) policy coordination is discussed. It provides the mechanisms of domestic coordination adopted for the Economic and Financial Adjustment Programme agreed upon with the Troika. Portugal may be regarded as matching one of the classification types of Hussein Kassim's typology of the national coordination of EU policy. The simplicity of the EU policy coordination machinery in Portugal emerged from trial and error, and through learning from the experiences of other Member States. The success of national coordination of EU policy is highly dependent not only on the quality of the work of the Direccao Geral de Assuntos Europeus but also on the Permanent Representation in Brussels (REPER). The Secretariat, which assembled a strong team with a high level of expertise, became rather important for national coordination of EU policy. The REPER consists of the best civil servants Portugal has to offer.
