The children from homes within a single neighbourhood and it are the social, economic and environmental forces of that particular neighbourhood which will influence the school's immediate aims, its social rules, and its general atmosphere. By the very circumstances arising from the blending of many adults and children within a distinct social region a school community is born. The staff made up of individuals who have been recruited into the service of that particular school, rather than drafted from a central pool. The education authority approved a building programme that would convert and extend the school premises to a design that would help to develop a community school programme. A design team was formed so that there would be a partnership between the architects and those of us responsible for establishing an extended school programme. The physically handicapped children arrived in their taxis, wondering where their fortunes had pitched them yet again.
