ABSTRACT

Severn's interest in the occult was shared by the founders of psychoanalysis. Freud had some interest in the occult, but he did not want psychoanalysis to be linked with mysticism. Ferenczi had his own interest in this area, which he both explored himself and was able to emphatically respond to in Severn's belief system. In 1909, early in psychoanalytic history, Freud, Ferenczi, and Jung, after they returned from the Clark University lectures in America, visited a female medium in Berlin whom Ferenczi knew. Freud was intrigued by her performance, stimulating his interest in thought transference. Realizing that he could not be associated with the occult as the leader of psychoanalysis, Freud encouraged Ferenczi and Jung to explore the area. A horoscope is an astrological chart or diagram representing the positions of the sun, moon, planets, astrological aspects and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth.
