ABSTRACT

The terms in the following list are taken from texts by Finch and Trewartha, E. Hills (Melbourne), W. H. Hobbs, P.James, Tarr and Von Engeln, Griffith Taylor, and others. The dozen books chosen for consultation were concerned with varying geographical fields, but if a term did not appear in them it was perforce omitted in this tentative glossary. The definitions are concise rather than detailed, since complete definitions would take more space than is available. For the same reason only the 700 words which most appeal to the editor have been included. Such a list shows that geography has a nomenclature whose scope is similar to that of other natural sciences. The glossary will be found to be of use, for instance, when one has to point out to freshmen that they cannot tackle senior lectures without preliminary work, since they have no knowledge of the considerable vocabulary. It would be interesting to know when the later terms were invented, and by whom. An asterisk denotes those introduced by the editor, many of which are described in his book Geographic Laboratory (Toronto, 1942). He will welcome additions to this glossary for later editions. The editor has received considerable help in this compilation from his son, David P. Taylor.
