ABSTRACT

This chapter presents conversations in the Mandarin Chinese language based on common daily situations with their matching English translations. Some of the sounds of Mandarin Chinese are so similar to English sounds, that they present little difficulty for the learner. The chapter also presents vocabulary and grammar sections and speech patterns in the Mandarin Chinese language with their appropriate English meanings along with examples. The grammar section illustrates verb complements. Speech patterns deal with the usage of resultative complements, directional complements, and potential complements. The chapter provides clear grammar explanations, and a Chinese-English glossary for quick reference. Exercises are provided along with the chapter to practice and develop the reader's basic skills. Expansion drills give confidence in building up longer sentences in Chinese, and improve fluency at the same time. The chapter can help people who wish to advance their Chinese language skills to higher levels.
