ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the progressive or continuous constructions, adjectival inflection in -s, compound nouns and use of laat with infinitives in Afrikaans language with some examples. When you were introduced to Afrikaans verbs the point was made that English progressive or continuous forms such as 'I am working' and 'I was working' or 'I have/had been working' are rendered simply by ek werk and ek het gewerk respectively. Adjectives proceeded by the indefinite pronouns iets and niks take an -s ending. Theoretically, this ending is also applied to comparatives, but it is now commonly omitted from comparatives. In Afrikaans compound nouns should always be written as one word. Laat has several meanings in Afrikaans and is a very important verb. It is used to render 'let' in imperatives, where it can be used together with either the subject or object pronoun.
