ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to express time in Afrikaans language with some examples. 'For' with periods of time is expressed in a number of ways. When an action that started in the past continues into the present, 'for' is rendered by al. When the action started and finished in the past, 'for' is best left untranslated but too an Anglicistic vir is often heard. When the action is to be performed in the future, 'for' must be rendered by vir. Normally when the finite verb in a clause is followed by an infinitive, which is always placed at the end of the clause, that infinitive is preceded by om te. The concept of any additional verb in a clause is being placed at the end of the clause. This is applicable to infinitives and past participles when the action is in the past tense.
