ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the passive, modal verbs, the conditional tense and use of the finite form het instead of the infinitive form he in both Afrikaans and English language with some examples. The concept passive is the same in both English and Afrikaans, but Afrikaans expresses it in a slightly different way. In English the passive is formed by using the verb 'to be' plus a past participle. In Afrikaans the people use word plus the past participle in the present and are plus the past participle in the past. Where a modal verb is preceded by sou, where they would logically expect Kan, moet and wil, it is usual in Afrikaans to use kon, moes and wou. A sort of past tense assimilation is occurring here with the past tense form sou forcing kan, moes and wil to adopt a past tense form.
