ABSTRACT

The author spotted a line which had not been included in the first printed version 'The ivory men make company between us', which the Librarian reported to Eliot by letter. The last full letter Theresa wrote author, conveying congratulations on my appointment to a professorship at the University of Nice, concluded: 'I remember your visits here with joy'. Some of his colleagues urged me to make one last plea that he should be asked to come out to give some readings; but author knew that it was out of the question. The author and his sister let Eliot give vent to his indignation, which soon spent itself: for Tomlin thinks he was implying that Ezra, however repentant he might be about his anti-Semitism or even about his having 'botched' the Cantos, was not going the right way about it.
