ABSTRACT
The most important development in the design sessions is the idea to bind the elements and the frames together with an ordinary ratcheting cargo strap. This development also gave a name to the project, 'Liina', which has a dual meaning in Finnish as both the word for a cargo strap and an old female name. It is clear that the students had studied all the issues related to transitional shelters and addressed them in a comprehensive way through their building prototype. Through a long process of logical deduction and reasoning, they had found the relevant questions to ask and posed a set of responses, the result was a high-quality design. The Liina Shelter has a rather modest architectural character, but the structure has surprisingly been one of the most recognized projects built by the Wood Program in the last 20 years.
