ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. Design-build studios necessitate a reconciliation of the sometimes discordant aspects of architecture and construction. Educators and students are challenged to address the contradictions inherent in abstract design thought versus the building process and material qualities. The design-build studio process demands that students engage with the community in addressing real-life problems with real architectural solutions that are simultaneously created with aesthetics and community desires in mind, and are grounded in sound economics. Design-build studios ultimately aim to harmonize ideas and making, as educators and students resolve the division between architecture and building. The trend towards inclusive and hands-on work in architectural education demonstrates a positive bridging of disciplines, a healthy grounding of these disciplines in reality and the radical reinvention of the tactile hands-on creative process.
