ABSTRACT

Once a project is lined up, the authors work with the client on grant writing and developing a program for the students that will give the clients what they want. The authors try to help the client to decide what they really need and can afford to write something that explains these dreams and constraints to the students, and gives background material on the organization, the neighborhood, cultural influences. The Supershed location on the site is selected with Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH) before the studio began. The clients are expected to provide funding for all materials, and the authors supply design and construction services. Those that pursue traditional architectural careers have a better understanding of the implications of lines they draw on paper, since they have an appreciation and working knowledge of construction, collaborating in teams, and are more comfortable on job sites.
