ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how the moon landing, as a technological achievement, is one giant leap for mankind in that it reveals the soul's move to firmly establish itself as reflective consciousness and thought, over and against instinctual life. It examines how ancient rituals and tools, in particular the spear, were used by the soul to further itself with the act of killing. The significance of the image in the Kubrik film is that it highlights the evolution of technology and its psychological function; the process that originally began with the bone used to kill and open up a reflective space for consciousness, continues with the rocket. The journey from psychological spear to rocket took a great deal of development in the history of the soul. Psychologically speaking, Christianity was the soul's process of radical transformation, its leap from a mythic mode of consciousness toward a more modern.
