ABSTRACT

Another way mothers can increase support is through psychotherapy. In clinical trials, psychotherapy has proven as effective as medications in treating depression, with lower rates of relapse (Claridge, 2014; Rupke et al., 2006). A recent meta-analysis of 24 studies found a large effect size for one-group, pre/posttest studies of the effectiveness of psychotherapy for perinatal depression (Claridge, 2014). There was a positive, medium effect size when treatment was compared to a control group. The effect sizes were the same whether the study was conducted during pregnancy or postpartum, showing that the treatments were effective in reducing depression in both time periods.
