ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some practical questions to use during sandtray therapy process and touches upon the assessment of progress in sandtray therapy. For the Adlerian therapist, sandtray therapy is a wonderful lifestyle analysis tool; for the narrative therapist, it is an effective tool in assisting clients to tell their story. For the cognitive therapist, it is a tool for exploring and disputing irrational beliefs; and for the family systems therapist, sandtray is a tool for exploring family of origin issues and communication dynamics. The chapter presents case examples: Adult Female, which explains that client, is a 40-year-old female and this is her first sandtray. She had been in therapy with Linda for approximately 40 sessions before introduction of the sand tray; and Young Male Adolescent that explores that client was a 13-year-old boy who was referred for therapy because he had responded to his own sexual victimization by victimizing a younger foster girl in his home.
