ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the many different, mainly non-technical matters that influence the conception, design and construction of real structures, and in particular what is required to make a structural design project a success. To design and build a building normally requires many different people, and what role they play inevitably has an effect on the work of those responsible for the conception and design of a building structure. To carry out a project for a structure that is part of a building is a serious undertaking. This means conceiving a suitable structural form and preparing all the project documentation that typically consists of calculations, drawings, specifications, material quantities and an estimate of the cost. Additional requirements include that the structure is buildable, is durable and is easy to alter for future changes of use. To achieve all this in a successful manner is no mean feat.
