ABSTRACT

Thinking about the differences between the questions "Whom did you learn from?" "Whom were you taught by?" and "Whom did you study with?" points to the distinct figure of the maitre a etudier. This chapter presents the teaching of studying as a role worth considering separately from the teaching of thinking. It proposes the figure of someone who teaches studying as the maitre a etudier or "master of studying". Gert Biesta proposes that "the experience of 'being taught by' is radically different from the experience of 'learning from'. The chapter explores whether it is possible to teach someone to study, if study is understood both as an activity and as a state of being. The problem with study as a state of being is that it is only very partially observable. The problem with study as a state of being is that it is only very partially observable.
