ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests communication practices which leaders and managers can implement in order to enact five cultural value commitments of ethically reliable organizing (ERO) as well as encourage other organizational members to enact them. These cultural value commitments are preoccupation with Institutionalizing ethical excellence, commitment to interpersonal consideration, reluctance to simplify ethical applications, deference to embodied moral knowing and sensitivity to the ethics of operations. The communication practices are some of the most concrete and immediately available resources for generating organizational members' moral mindfulness and enhancing organizational moral learning capacity. The chapter organizes recommendations to generate and reinforce those cultural value commitments around the interrelated ideas of framing, listening, and organizational communication norms. Small wins can link and amplify throughout a social system and catch on in unexpected ways, leading to positive and virtuous upward spirals when communication practices generate contagious ethical culturing.
