ABSTRACT

The economy of Papua New Guinea reflects the country's profound and uneven development. The status of women varies throughout the regions and provinces of Papua New Guinea, which reflects the country's high diversity of cultures. The collection and veracity of labour market data are severely limited in Papua New Guinea. Women in Papua New Guinea generally face sets of severe challenges in their care roles due to high levels of ill health and domestic violence, which impact directly on them and on those for whom they care. The level and nature of violence in Papua New Guinea, and that directed towards women, varies greatly by region. The most positive aspect of state support for communities generally and for females in particular is support for schooling. The vast majority of the citizens of Papua New Guinea live completely detached from modern institutions of governance and social welfare.
