ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on earlier cases and the female plaintiffs who were among the first to travel from Wales to initiate suits in Star Chamber. Less well-explored for the purpose, however, has been the court of Star Chamber, perhaps because it is considered to have the smallest female participation rate. It was the king's claim to offer justice to all his subjects and provide common treatment, which gave the Welsh access to prerogative courts such as Star Chamber. Where the records of Star Chamber have been used effectively to explore the roles and agency of women in Wales. Any analysis of Star Chamber bills must acknowledge their legal fictions and their need to tailor the case for specific purposes. Witness statements in the narratives of Welsh Star Chamber cases do show women intervening for positive or negative effect, but they do not portray women either instigating or physically defending themselves against interpersonal violence.
