Our understanding of disease and illness are socially and culturallyconstructed, and illness involves cultural practices and shared meanings arising from patients’ lived experiences (Morris 1998). Research shows that much ill health never reaches medical attention, a phenomenon termed the ‘illness iceberg’ (Last 1963). Understanding lay beliefs and culture relating to health and illness is significant for health professionals delivering health care, particularly in preventive and early intervention services.
