ABSTRACT

An environmental management system (EMS) is a set of logical processes to help an organisation manage its environmental issues effectively. Important models include ISO 14001, the international EMS standard, and the European Union Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). EMAS sets out a standardised approach to environmental management, including an EMS equivalent to ISO 14001. There are other national EMS schemes, but ISO 14001 is predominant, and internationally recognised.
