ABSTRACT

Work is a topic capable of generating considerable discussion. One reason, no doubt, is that for a majority of adults, work occupies a substantial proportion of their waking hours. Particularly in modern America, a person’s work is a dominant factor in identity—both for the individual and for the wider society (Bellah, Madsen, Sullivan, Swidler, & Tipton, 1985). Any human activity that commands so much time, energy, and interest is a fertile arena for theological reflection.
