ABSTRACT

Long before the first hint of summer in most of the country, the boys of summer begin the annual pageantry that is commonly known as the national pastime. The legacy of baseball is built upon the heroic feats of individuals who, otherwise, would be subject to society's worst social stigmas. While the Civil War was being fought, it was the North that drew the color line in professional baseball. Diversity in major league baseball would mean defying the color line, but most important, changing the nature of the game itself. The allure of baseball is as much a part of the culture in Latin America and Japan as it is in the United States. The recent acclaim received by Sammy Sosa attests to more than baseballs achievement of diversity. Today, new dreams are being shaped as the battle for inclusion and diversity in baseball has given rise to new aspirations for management and ownership.
