Typically, dance is a physical exercise that requires the body to move to music. Certain characteristics of dance, be it Western Ballet, Waltz, Salsa, Folk, or Indian Classical, are universal. However, it would be too unfair an understanding if we combine all these forms under one umbrella term. It would not do justice to any. Each form has, apart from the commonalities, its own uniqueness to offer. But in order to remain focused, and in keeping with the fact that both the dancers we met earlier (in Chapter 6) are Bharatanatyam dancers, we will restrict our understanding of the benefits of dance to the Indian classical dance of Bharatanatyam. Indian classical dance is a broad brand and, thus, there are bound to be some overlaps with other forms such as Odissi, Kathak and Mohini Attam, among others.
