ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a single aspect of the total problem, management of the modeling component of the program. The author attempts an analysis of the problems associated with management of large-scale environmental modeling projects. First, the author briefly discusses the Eastern Deciduous Forest Biome to provide a context within which the reader can evaluate the validity of extrapolating the analyses to other programs. The International Biological Program (IBP) was established in 1964 as a world-wide effort to study the biological productivity of the earth with particular reference to human welfare. In author's experience, the most effective approach calls the scientist's basic motivational structure into play so that he attempts to produce high-quality science without having to be manipulated. An excellent example of applying the explicit motivational structures of the university scientist to management of the modeling project can be seen in the development of the biological components of our lake ecosystem model, CLEAN.
