For a long time, the concept of community was missing from my thinking about the Morelos settlements. When I nished up lab work at Yautepec I was unwilling or unable to evaluate the Morelos sites as communities. My rst task was to write up the results of both eldwork projects, a process that took ve years. I had to describe these excavations-in minute detail-in Spanish-language reports to the Mexican government. By the time this was done I was burned out. I didn’t care whether the people who had lived in those excavated houses were rich, poor, happy, sad, resilient, or downtrodden. I had excavated their houses, I had described it all in great detail, and I was ready for something new.
