ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that leading and managing complex issues in multi-faceted educational settings requires effective leaders. It considers the leadership qualities and behaviours that are required for such challenging times. The chapter focuses on what leadership preparation and development is needed to lead organisations of different sizes and shapes for the future. It shows how leadership development activities benefit settings at different levels. According to the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services (NCLSC), that future leader will need to be creative and have skills of collaboration, as in working in academies or in securing resources in multi-agency teams to support learners in settings. Leadership preparation enhances the skills, knowledge and understanding of the tasks, roles and responsibilities of being a leader. Leadership development involves developing knowledge that promotes understanding to improve practice (Armstrong, 2009), thereby having an element of personal learning.
