ABSTRACT

As you are aware, we live in a superficial society that embraces youth, beauty and economic status above intelligence, accomplishment and kindness of heart. Theodore Reik's (1963) famous book titled The Need to be Loved illustrates too the need to be desired. The population of this group is gay gentlemen over the age of 40. These men sought psychotherapy, in particular group, as a venue to help reduce their developing depression and anxiety. It also was brought up that it is becoming easier for them to build friendships with people of their age instead of their previous transitory encounters and they are developing friendships in the heterosexual community rather than the majority of their social life being exclusively within the gay community. There really are not any contraindications for the group members but rather the contraindications are more a part of the therapist's experience.
