ABSTRACT

Mother-daughter relationship sets the foundation for a woman's relational self. It affects the daughter's emotional, interpersonal and professional journey, particularly during transitional stages such as entering college or getting married. In all-women groups focused on mother-daughter relationship issues daughters need to understand mother blaming attitudes and learn to accept mothers as human and imperfect. These groups are suitable for exploring and working through negative and/or conflicted feelings, and for identifying with caring/empathic and assertive women. All-women psychodynamic groups, with female group therapists, are most appropriate for obtaining insight into the mother-daughter relationship. The female group therapist is the most prominent maternal authority in this type of group. An all-women safe, hard-working and reflective group, focused on mother-daughter relationships, may help members work through intense negative feelings towards their mothers, and decrease or eliminate mother blaming. The therapist's interventions plus the group's hall of mirrors' may contribute to members' enhanced personal, interpersonal and professional satisfaction.
