ABSTRACT

Wavetable oscillators are usually associated with the generation of sound from a single cycle of a waveform (as discussed in §14.4, p.444). Sample-based synthesis extends the idea of wavetable oscillators to the storage and replay of longer audio data, such as a whole note, or many sound events (a drum pattern lasting for four bars, for example). Longer segments of sound have development in character over time, which leads to particular considerations and control techniques as described in this chapter.
