ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Fatigue performance of bridge expansion joints, a critical consideration in their selection and use, is discussed in relation to the most versatile type of expansion joint available: the modular joint. The recent fatigue testing, in the “infinite life regime”, of a modular joint in accordance withAASHTO specifications – the most demanding by any major authority worldwide – is presented, with reference to the particularly demanding interpretation by leading American authorities of the provisions relating to the number of load cycles to be applied during testing.
