ABSTRACT

In conversations with Jews who were born in Vienna after the war there occur again and again phrases like ‘My childhood lies in a no man’s land’, ‘We lived here and yet we did not live here’, ‘Home was a place that lay outside of space’. I cannot remember anybody ever speaking about Austrian politics unless there was a direct connection with the Jews but when the news was about Israel or America we had to be quiet. Israel was felt to be the real homeland and America the great defender of the Jews.
