ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the parenting styles of second-generation Chinese Americans' parents based on a case study of five Chinese professional middle-class families in the United States. This case study illuminate the similarities and differences of the parenting styles among these parents, which may help educators to develop a deeper understanding of this ethnic socioeconomic group. Several academic and practical implications may be drawn from this study to inform the educational community. It provides insight into the myth that all Chinese American students are gifted. Another theme that was very clear in this study was the maintenance of Chinese culture. All the parents shared how important it was that their children know their native culture and home language. Several of the parents spoke of celebrating Chinese festivals and how they supported their children's use of their native language through speaking and writing.
