chapter  8
Fostering Reading Comprehension
Pages 9

Being able to gain meaning from text is the purpose of reading. As Ruddell and Unrau (1994) explain, “Reading is indeed a meaning-construction process that enables us to create carefully reasoned as well as imaginary worlds fi lled with new concepts, creatures, and characters” (p. 996). As students read, they use their knowledge of words, concepts, and experiences to help guide their thinking and construct meaning of the text. Whether children are reading or listening to a simple story book or reading a challenging informational text, their job as readers is to make sense of the text.
